The aims of this study were comparing the health related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with OSAS and insomnia, and determining the factors that influence the HRQoL in these patients. Methods Finally we enrolled 175 OSAS and 36 insomnia patients. All subjects has undertaken night polysomnography. The HRQoL was evaluated using the Medical Outcome Study Short Form-36 (SF-36). The Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, and Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) were used to evaluate the sleep quality, subjective excessive daytime sleepiness, and depressive mood respectively. Results The mean age of OSAS was 47.2±12.3 years and that of insomnia was 52.3±11.6. The physical component summary score and total score of SF-36 of insomnia patients were lower than those of OSAS patients (56.6±18 vs. 65.9±18.5, 61.2±18.6 vs. 69.0±19.2, respectively). The scores of PSQI in insomnia patients were significantly higher than those of OSA patients. The sleep latency of polysomnography in insomnia patients was significantly longer than OSAS. The sleep efficiency in insomnia patients was lower, the arousal index, WASO and N1 sleep ratio were higher than those of OSA patients. There was no correlation between the apnea-hypopnea index and SF-36 scores or BDI-2 scores in OSA patients. Conclusions These findings demonstrate that insomnia represents a considerable burden on the HRQoL compared to OSAS, especially physical components. Insomnia patients also have poor sleep quality as well. ER -
