Sleep study (polysomnography) and respiratory function (spirometry) were performed after the diagnosis of ALS, until 48 months. Results We selected 29 patients, 65.5%(n=19) were male gender and 34.5%(n=10) were female. Mean age was 64.6±12.4 years(34-84). Bulbar involvement was present in 48.3%(n=14) and 51.7%(n=15) had exclusively spinal involvement.Age at diagnosis was 63.2±12.9 years.BMI was 26.7±4.6 kg / m2, of which only 17.2% (n=5) had obesity criteria.Forced vital capacity (FVC) was 82.7±28.2%, with a minimum value of 14.9% and diurnal hypercapnia was already present in 17.2% (n=5) of the patients. As to the polysomnographic study, all patients had sleep disorders (although 86.2% had ESS<10), with 67.6±13.8% sleep efficiency and awakening rate of 17.2/hour. The OSAS was present in 55.2%(n=16), 56.3%(n=9) of mild severity, 25%(n=4) of moderate and 18.7(n=3) of severe.Patient mortality at 5 years was 55.2%(n=16).Age at diagnosis was 63.2±12.9 years. Conclusion The present study, although descriptive and small, shows the prevalence of sleep disorders (namely, fragmented sleep and OSAS) in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. It was evident that these changes should be addressed early, since a timely diagnosis has an impact on both quality of life and survival.
