Equine-assisted therapeutic activities and their influence on the heart rate variability: A systematic review
2020, Complementary Therapies in Clinical PracticeCitation Excerpt :To be precise, we proposed carrying out a systematic review of those works from the existing scientific literature that have explored the relation between the equine-assisted therapeutic activities and their influence on the HRV of the users. This current review has not taken into account those works that have related the practice of some forms of sportive horse riding with the HRV, since we consider that the effect on the HRV of physical activity per se has already been sufficiently studied [35–38,49] and does not fit our proposal, which is to explore the effect produced by the stimuli from the animal and the work environment on the users’ HRV in the context of equine-assisted therapeutic activities. Most of the works included in the present review indicate that the equine-assisted therapeutic activities exercise a favourable influence on the users as they facilitate an increase in the PNS activity and a decrease in the SNS activity.
