    Patient outcomes of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection depends on the early inflammatory response. Children and females are more protected due to their ability to mount an early robust inflammatory response, but this makes children susceptible to inflammatory sequelae. The impaired early inflammatory response in older adults or patients with comorbidities leads to viral persistence resulting in severe disease and possibly death.
