Abstract
Introduction: Studies have shown very different adherence to non-invasive positive airway pressure(nPAP) therapy. We aimed to investigate the adherence to nPAP therapy in patients with chronic respiratory insufficiency due to neuromuscular disorders(NMD), obesity-hypoventilation syndrome(OHS) or other reasons to sleep-disordered breathing(SDB) in the East of Denmark.
Methods: This cohort study included adult patients with association to the Respiratory Centre of the East of Denmark treated with nPAP therapy: bilevel(bipap), continuous(cpap) or adaptive servo-ventilation(ASV) with a remote monitoring system in April2022. Primary outcome was the number of adherent patients defined as median use of nPAP therapy >4hours/day.
Results: A total of 241 patients were included in the study.
The number of adherent patients with OHS was 56(64%), with NMD 97(75%) including dystrophia myotonica 3(27%) and with SDB,other 21(84%).
Conclusion: The proportion of patients that used nPAP therapy for more than 4 hrs per day was 73% in a danish population of adult patients with NMD, OHS and with other reasons to SDB. There were big differences in the proportions of adherent patients between the diagnoses.
