Resting echocardiogram, spirometry and incremental exercise test were done. Results: Compared with CTRL, patients [age:50{\textpm}11 yrs, BMI:31{\textpm}3 kg/m2, FEV1:84{\textpm}14 \%predicted, apnoea hypopnea index (AHI): 43{\textpm}19/hour; mean{\textpm}SD] had greater PWV (7.3{\textpm}1.2 vs. 5.9{\textpm}0.9 m/sec) and AIx (29{\textpm}13 vs. 15{\textpm}5 \%), p\<0.05. Peak work rate (WR) and oxygen uptake were lower and iso-WR dyspnea was greater in patients vs. CTRL during exercise (p\<0.05). Among arterial stiffness \& echocardiographic measurements and exercise measures of ventilatory efficiency, only PWV correlated with OSA severity indices: AHI (r=0.57, p=0.03), O2 desaturation index (r=0.53, p=0.04), and minimal overnight O2 saturation (r=-0.75, p\<0.01), Figure. Furthermore, PWV correlated with peak WR (r=-0.55, p=0.01) and the slope of dyspnea/WR during exercise (r=0.71, p\<0.001) in patients. Conclusion: Patients with OSA had evidence of increased arterial stiffness compared with controls; that correlated with indices of disease severity. Moreover, increased arterial stiffness could partially explain patient-centered outcomes such as increased exertional dyspnea and reduced exercise capacity.FootnotesCite this article as ERJ Open Research 2021; 7: Suppl. 7, 62.This is an ERS Lung Science Conference abstract.
