RT Journal Article SR Electronic T1 Non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections during cancer therapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors: a systematic review JF ERJ Open Research JO erjor FD European Respiratory Society SP 00364-2022 DO 10.1183/23120541.00364-2022 A1 Lombardi, Andrea A1 Gramegna, Andrea A1 Ori, Margherita A1 Azzarà, Cecilia A1 Blasi, Francesco A1 Gori, Andrea YR 2022 UL http://openres.ersjournals.com/content/early/2022/09/16/23120541.00364-2022.abstract AB Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are drugs growingly employed in the treatment of cancers but there are still uncertainties about their possible role in the risk of developing non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infections.To understand this, we performed a systematic review of the literature including studies published between 20/06/2012–20/06/2022 which described the occurrence of NTM infections among patients treated with ICIs.Overall, we included 7 studies describing 9 patients with NTM infection occurring during ICIs therapy.NTM infections occurring during ICIs therapy are mainly caused by germs belonging to the Mycobacterium avium complex, involve primarily the lungs, on average 1 year after the start of treatment and are not associated with immunosuppressive treatments.FootnotesThis manuscript has recently been accepted for publication in the ERJ Open Research.
