P. aeruginosa and C. albicans are routinely co-isolated from the same CF patients and co-infection has been associated with worse disease than P. aeruginosa infection alone (Bakare et al., 2003, Bauernfeind et al., 1987, Bhargava et al., 1989, Brett et al., 1988, Chotirmall et al., 2010a, Chotirmall and McElvaney, 2014, Chotirmall et al., 2010b, Haase et al., 1991, Hughes and Kim, 1973, Kulczycki et al., 1978, Navarro et al., 2001, Przyklenk et al., 1987, Valenza et al., 2008). In vitro studies indicate P. aeruginosa preferentially attaches to the filamentous form of the fungus (Hogan and Kolter, 2002).
